High school football Week 10: Tribute for a beloved coach; CMAC showdown set after wins
The late Justin Garza was on everyone’s mind at San Joaquin Memorial High on Friday.
Garza played for the Panthers before graduating from the school in 1993.
Garza was the head football coach at Central High from 2012-2015, becoming a beloved campus and community figure after starting his career as a teacher there in 1999 and also serving as a football, track and golf assistant.
Garza died in 2017 after a six-year cancer fight.
Central Unified’s new high school was named after the football coach, chosen from a list of about 200 suggestions submitted by the public.
Friday’s meeting between Garza and Memorial was the first.
Players from Memorial signed their names on a Panthers helmet and presented it to the Garza family.
The Bee’s fifth-ranked Panthers won the game 51-6 to remain undefeated in the County/Metro Athletic Conference at 4-0.
Sanger 42, Bullard 6
The Apaches also won another CMAC game to stay undefeated in conference at 4-0.
That sets up a Week 11 showdown at Memorial for the CMAC title.
Apaches running back Jacob Gonzalez led the way with three rushing touchdowns.
Sanger has won the past four games after starting 1-4.
Clovis North 28, Buchanan 21
Talk about a shakeup in the Tri-River Athletic Conference.
That is what the Broncos did after pulling out a win against the Bears.
Clovis North got the win behind Andrew Chavez’s 39-yard touchdown run with two minutes remaining in the game.
That win by the Broncos means only Clovis West and Central are tied for first in the TRAC at 3-1.
Clovis North remains in the hunt for at least a share of the TRAC title if it beats Central next week and Clovis West loses to Clovis.
Clovis 56, Clovis East 34
The Golden Boot remains with the Cougars.
Tyler Marquez scored on a touchdown run in the first quarter that gave the Cougars the lead for good.
Cougars freshman quarterback Degan Rose finished with three touchdown passes, while Roman Moreno had two touchdown runs.
Sunnyside 36, McLane 6
The Wildcats clinched at least a share of the North Yosemite League title.
Sunnyside can win the title outright with a win over Sanger West next week.
The Wildcats have rolled through the NYL, outscoring opponents 274-94.
Tanner Wilson threw three touchdowns for Sunnyside.
