High school football Week 7: Milestone win for SJM coach; OT finishes and a big debut

Brandon Ramirez continues to shine for the San Joaquin Memorial High football team.

The Fresno State commit finished with three rushing touchdowns as The Bee’s fourth-ranked Panthers rolled to a 42-20 victory over No. 19 Edison in a County/Metro Athletic Conference opener at Ratcliffe Stadium on Friday night.

The win gives Anthony Goston his 150th win in school history, according to section historian Bob Barnett.

The Panthers have been dominant in the CMAC since 2018 and they showed no signs of slowing down.

The defense flexed its muscles, led by Tommy Nix who finished with two interceptions, including one that was returned for a touchdown.

Also, Ramon Ruiz had a kickoff return for a touchdown in the third quarter. He followed that up with a fumble recovery for a touchdown that gave the Panthers a 42-14 lead.

Dinuba 36, No. 13 Hanford 30 (OT)

Hanford was up 30-16 after a Kourdey Glass rushing touchdown, but the Emperors rallied with two touchdowns, including Kristian Bobenrieth’s interception return for a touchdown in a West Yosemite League game.

A two-point conversion that was successful with 2:40 remaining sent the game into overtime.

The momentum carried over into OT for Dinuba when Dom Nunez scored on a 23-yard run.

The homecoming loss at Neighbor Bowl was Hanford’s second straight in overtime.

Liberty-Madera Ranchos 35, Fowler 28 (OT)

Liberty converted a fourth-and-3 on a pass from Luke McFarland to Mitch Whaley, and Vince Oberti’s 4-yard touchdown run gave the Hawks the lead in overtime.

On the Redcats’ OT possession, Dolan Dilbeck intercepted Fowler’s fourth-down pass.

No. 6 Central 27, No. 9 Clovis 21

Dayton Tafoya completed 18 of 33 for 288 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Grizzlies to a Tri-River Athletic Conference win Thursday.

Just before halftime, Clovis got within 20-14 on Degan Rose’s 38-yard touchdown pass to Jaden Carrillo.

Tafoya, however, gave the Grizzlies a two-score lead with a 60-yard touchdown pass to Imari Conley.

Clovis got back within six points and was driving for a go-ahead score in the fourth quarter, but Rose was picked off by Hall in Grizzlies territory to seal the game.
