High school football Week 5: Turning point in Central game; a shocker and game balls
The Central High football team was hoping to avenge last season’s loss to Liberty-Bakersfield in the Central Section Division I championship game.
Instead, the Patriots, ranked No. 6 by The Bee, outscored the fifth-ranked Grizzlies 28-7 in the second half for a 35-10 victory at Koligian Stadium on Friday night.
Central had a drive going in the third quarter, trailing 7-3. The Grizzlies go down to the Liberty’s 12-yard line before Dayton Tafoya was intercepted by Xander Chisolm who picked up the ball from the receiver’s cleat and ran it back for a 98-yard touchdown.
The Grizzlies never recovered.
Liberty defeated Central 42-14 in the section final at Koligian Stadium last season.
No. 3 Clovis West 38, No. 17 Edison 0
The Golden Eagles got two special team scores in the first half by Markel Sanders for a win over the Tigers.
Clovis West quarterback Ryan Markarian finished the game with three touchdown passes, two to Marshel Sanders.
The Golden Eagles will open Tri-River Athletic Conference play against Buchanan on Sept. 30.
No. 9 Clovis East 49, Tulare Union 34
The Timberwolves were led by Lamaj Travis’ 119 yards rushing and four touchdowns.
Caleb Slocum ran for 62 yards and two touchdowns as Clovis East outgained Tulare 366-353.
The Tribe was led by Sony Guess’ 93 yards rushing and six receptions for 42 yards, with three touchdowns.
Redwood 26, No. 4 Hanford 20 (OT)
The Rangers celebrated a 1-yard touchdown run by Ty Potts in overtime to secure the upset over the Bullpups.
Redwood handed Hanford its first loss last season, too, winning 24-21 when both were in the West Yosemite League.

London Alexander, Justin Garza: Had an interception and scored four touchdowns in the Guardians’ 39-24 win over Coalinga.
Gage Armbruster, Corcoran: Passed for five touchdowns in the Panthers’ 59-7 victory over Granite Hills.
Max Bakker, Central Valley Christian: Accounted for five touchdowns — four passes and one rush — in a 42-7 victory over Mission Oak.
Caleb Cisco, Liberty-Madera Ranchos: Two rushing touchdowns in the Hawks’ 27-24 victory over Caruthers.
Devin Douangmala, Hoover: Three rushing touchdowns, lifting the Patriots to a 33-14 victory over Sanger West.
Anthony Fernandez, Firebaugh: His two touchdown runs were enough in the Eagles’ 14-7 victory over Immanuel.
Joey Garcia, Chowchilla: Opened the Tribe’s scoring with an 85-yard kickoff return in a 54-0 victory over Yosemite.
Marquese Glynn, Washington Union: 26-yard touchdown pass to Noah Taylor was the game-winner in a 13-12 victory over Dinuba.
Nate Martinez, Woodlake: Three interceptions to help the Tigers defeat Lindsay 28-16.
Caleb Matthews, Justin Garza: Five touchdown passes to lead the Guardians past Coalinga 39-24.
Logan Moreno, Reedley: Rushed for 125 yards and two touchdowns in a 47-27 win over Selma.
Ruben Moreno, Clovis: Two touchdown runs helped the Cougars to a 21-14 victory over Bullard.
Gus Remlinger, Buchanan: Had an interception return for a touchdown that gave the Bears a 24-21 lead en route to defeating San Joaquin Memorial 31-24.
Aiden Owens, Madera: Helped the Coyotes beat Golden Valley-Bakersfield 34-24 with his play as a running back and a linebacker.
Angel Pereida and Jose Soriano, Matlida Torres: The Toros won on the last second when Pereida had a 25-yard touchdown reception from Soriano in a 26-20 victory over Roosevelt.
Jacob Rocha, Reedley: Completed 15 for 19 for 247 yards and 2 TDs and had one rushing TD in the Pirates’ 47-27 victory over Selma.
Markel Sanders, Clovis West: His blocked field goal return for a touchdown in the second quarter sparked the Golden Eagles to a 38-0 victory over Edison. He also had another special team touchdown.
Brady Schwab, Fresno Christian: Two fumble recoveries in the Eagles’ 48-0 victory over Alpaugh.
Adrian Sierra, Strathmore: Four rushing touchdowns to lead the Spartans to a 63-0 victory over Orange Cove.
Jordan Stewart, McLane: Hit the end zone twice, guiding the Highlanders to a 28-21 victory over Fresno.
Lamaj Travis, Clovis East: 17 carries for 119 yards and four touchdowns in a 49-34 win over Tulare Union.
