High school football Week 4: Which ranked teams stayed perfect; wild finish; game balls

Nine teams in The Bee’s Central Section high school football Top 25 stayed unbeaten with wins Friday night including No. 4 Clovis West off to a 4-0 start for the first time since 2006.

Clovis West held No. 13 Bullard to one touchdown in the second half while scoring 14 points in the third quarter en route to a 28-14 victory.

The Golden Eagles will look to keep the momentum going against No. 20 Edison (3-0) next week at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

In other big matchups Friday:

No. 7 Central Valley Christian 23, No. 14 Clovis North 9

The Cavaliers (4-0) got their first win against a Clovis school.

The Broncos led 7-0 after Vincent Cordoba’s 35-yard touchdown reception from Mario Cosma.

Clovis North quarterback Mario Cosma, left, manages to complete a pass as he’s hit by Central Valley Christian’s Trent Greidanus, right, in second half action Friday, Sept. 9, 2022 in Clovis. CVC won the nonleague game 23-9.

That is the only lead Clovis North would see because CVC responded with Caleb Collison’s 1-yard touchdown run and a two-point conversion by Brent Kroeze to Oregon commit Jaeden Moore.

Max Bakker threw two touchdowns for the Cavaliers.

No. 5 Hanford 49, No. 12 Frontier 47

The Bullpups (4-0) prevented the Titans from converting on a two-point conversion with less than a minute remaining.

But that wasn’t the end of it.

Frontier recovered an onside kick and attempted a winning field goal, but came up short.

Hanford had a 34-14 lead before the Titans rallied to tie at 41.

Albert Richardson’s 1-yard rushing touchdown and a successful two-point conversion by Daniel Gomez proved to be enough for the Bullpups.

Other games

No. 21 Reedley 42, Coalinga 22: The Pirates (3-0) rolled up 411 yards on offense, led by Jacob Rocha who completed 11 of 21 for 189 yards and two touchdowns against two interceptions.

Kerman 44, No. 25 Sunnyside 18: The Lions (4-0) got a statement victory for first-year coach Damon Jenkins, who played at Fresno State. Kerman scored the final 20 points to put the game away.

Madera 34, Madera South 30: The Coyotes scored 27 unanswered points and a goal line stand at the 1-yard line prevented the Stallions from taking the lead in the Stadium Road Showdown. Josh Marchan made the stop for the Coyotes.
