Fresno-area prep roundup: Caruthers, Orange Cove win softball regional titles

The Caruthers High and Orange Cove softball teams are CIF Southern California champions.

The Blue Raiders won the title on the last play.

Morgan Trigueiro had a walk-off single to score Paige Sterling for a 6-5 victory over Nipomo in the Division V title game on Saturday.

It was a battle throughout. Caruthers took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Anisa Torres drove in the first run on a single to score Gizelle Aguirre. Trigueiro knocked in the second run on a sacrifice fly.

The Blue Raiders gave up three runs in the fifth inning to trail 5-2. But Caruthers countered, scoring two runs in the bottom half of the inning and tying the game in the sixth inning when Raven Sandoval scored on an error.

Trigueiro struck out nine to pick up the win.

Caruthers won the Central Section Division V title after a 14-4 victory over Boron at Margie Wright Diamond. Nipomo was the Central Section D-VI champion.

Orange Cove wins another intrasection matchup

In another regional final pitting Central Section champions, Orange Cove defeated Monache 8-6 for the D-IV title. The Titans were coming off a Central Section Division IV win, defeating Mission Prep 10-0. Monache was the section D-III winner.

Clovis, Central come up short

Clovis, the NorCal Division I No. 3 seed, fell to No. 1 St. Francis-Mountain View 6-0.

The Lancers put the game away for good, scoring four runs in the fifth inning.

Clovis won the Central Section Division I title, defeating Central 2-0.

The Grizzlies, the No. 2 seed in NorCal D-III, lost to top-seeded Sutter 2-1.
