Fresno-area prep baseball: Clovis West wins Coca-Cola Classic title game; Top 25 rankings

Cayden Munster provided the pop for the Clovis West High baseball team.

He hit a home run in the sixth inning as the Golden Eagles defeated San Joaquin Memorial 9-2 in the championship game of the Coca-Cola Classic at Clovis High on March 12.

Munster was named the tournament’s co-Most Valuable Player, along with teammate Tyler Patrick who pitched five innings with one earned run.

Clovis West and San Joaquin Memorial played for the title after giving up the least runs.

The Golden Eagles ended the tournament going 5-1 and just giving up nine runs. San Joaquin Memorial finished 4-2. Other teams’ records in the tournament: Hanford 5-1 (22 runs allowed), Fresno 5-1 (28), Liberty-Bakersfield 4-1-1 (22), Bullard 4-2 (13), Clovis 4-2 (18), Frontier 3-3 (24), Mt. Whitney 3-3 (21), Redwood 3-3 (21), Clovis East 3-3 (22), Central 3-3 (32), Clovis North 2-3-1 (32), Madera 2-4 (12), Edison 2-4 (31), El Diamante 1-5 (26), Tulare Western 0-6 (21), Sunnyside 0-6 (61).

Around the horn

The Bee’s No. 1 Buchanan heads to Southern California to play Capistrano Valley and Dana Hills on Friday and Saturday, respectively. The Bears last played March 3-5, taking on Cardinal Newman, Clayton Valley Charter and De La Salle. Buchanan went 1-2 in those games, defeating De La Salle 3-2.

Devon Daniel continues to be dominant for Kerman, striking out 15 to give the Lions a 1-0 victory over Kingsburg in the championship game of the Central Valley Diamond Classic. Adam Delgado provided the lone RBI for Kerman. Daniel improved to 5-0.

Clovis North defeated Tulare Western 2-1, but Collin DeBorde of TW threw a no-hitter in the game.

Laton’s Jobe Olson threw a two-hitter with 16 strikeouts in the Mustangs’ 5-3 victory over Fresno Christian.

Monache’s Richie Bailey threw a five inning no-hitter, allowing two walks while striking out 12 in a 13-0 victory over Shafter at the Wasco tournament.

On March 3, Clovis pitcher Ian Barnett had a no-hitter on 104 pitches in a 1-0 victory over Tulare Western. He got the win after Edwin Estrada drove in Logan Smith in the fifth inning.
