Preps: See West Coast Relays highlights; athlete of week winners; Selma stars win titles
The two-day West Coast Relays wrapped up at Buchanan High’s Veterans Memorial Stadium this past weekend.
The West Coast Relays, once an Olympic-class event that has morphed into a top in-season high school meet, boasts past competitors including Dutch Warmerdam, Bob Mathias, Tommie Smith, Rafer Johnson and Henry Ellard.
The West Coast Relays didn’t take place in 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic, but the event made its return for the 93rd time.

Athlete of the Week voting results
Will Gagnon of Reedley baseball and Noemi Uribe of Washington Union softball were the top vote-getters in last week’s Boys and Girls Athlete of the Week polls.
Gagnon had 49.3% of the votes, ahead of AJ George of Hoover basketball (28.8%) and Eddie Saldivar of San Joaquin Memorial baseball (19.5%).
Uribe totaled 40.1% of the votes. followed by Gizelle Aguirre of Caruthers soccer (26.7%) and Nseije Ortiz of Porterville basketball (24.4%).

Andrew Huerta scored the go-ahead goal to give Clovis East a 1-0 victory over Buchanan in Tri-River Athletic Conference boys soccer.
The TRAC standings: Clovis 4-1-1, Clovis North 4-1-1, Clovis East 3-3, Clovis West 3-3, Central 3-3 and Buchanan 0-6.
Basketball: Buchanan rallies
In a matchup of unbeatens, Buchanan rallied from a nine-point deficit in the third quarter for a 56-52 victory over Clovis. in TRAC girls basketball.
The Cougars led by as many as 10 points before the Bears rallied.
Ashtyn Arnold led the charge with 23 points and 14 rebounds as Buchanan improved to 2-0 in the TRAC and 9-0 overall.
Milestone win for volleyball coach
Madera South boys volleyball coach Steve Guglielmana picked up his 300th career win when the Stallions defeated Madera.
Former Selma wrestling stars nab titles
Former Selma High wrestling star Richard Figueroa is headed to Russia for the World Championship.
Figueroa took first in the U.S. Junior men’s freestyle 57-kilogram class.
In the best-of-three championship round he defeated Ryan Miller (Penn RTC) in back-to-back bouts via technical fall.
The two-time Cadet World Team Member will represent Team USA on Aug. 16-22.
His sister, Gracie, was also crowned a champion.
She is the Senior Women’s national champion after an 11-1 technical fall over Alexandria Liles in the 62-kilogram class.
Former SJM star Pondexter now a college coach
Quincy Pondexter was named a University of Washington men’s basketball assistant coach, the school announced Monday.
Pondexter was a star at San Joaquin Memorial with the Lopez brothers, Brook and Robin.
“I always knew that at some point, I would come back to Seattle because my heart has always been at UW,” Pondexter said in a news release. He joins the staff of Washington coach Mike Hopkins.
Pondexter played for the Huskies from 2006-10 and finished his Washington career with 1,786 points, which ranks fifth all-time. He recorded 83 career double-digit scoring games in a Washington-record 136 games played while his 30 career 20-point nights rank fifth.
Pondexter was selected as the No. 26 pick in the 2010 NBA draft by the Oklahoma City Thunder and was traded to the New Orleans Hornets.
He spent eight seasons in the NBA.
