Clovis West High’s Cole Anderson and Hoover’s AJ George set boys basketball scoring records to highlight action last week.

Anderson notched a school-record 51 points, according to Central Section historian Bob Barnett, in the Golden Eagles’ 86-53 win over Garces.

The UC Santa Barbara commit made a school-record 13 3-pointers.

In the third quarter, he made nine consecutive 3-pointers for a section-record 27 points. Anderson also set a state-record with 10 3-pointers.

He didn’t play in the fourth quarter.

Anderson is the school career scoring leader with 2,304 points and has made a section-record 397 career 3-pointers, Barnett said.

George set two Hoover records by scoring 49 points with 33 coming in the second half against Central. The previous school single-game record was 42 points set by Tom Laub in 1974, Barnett said.

George tied a school record by making eight 3-pointers.

Bob Bennett coached baseball at Bullard for 11 seasons before a 34-year career at Fresno State.

Clovis North coach Jeff Prieto has worn No. 26 to honor his grandfather who died on May 31, 2020.

Bennett had a 1,302-759-4 record at Fresno State with 17 conference titles and trips to the College World Series in 1988 and 1991. He retired after the 2002 season; Fresno State renamed its baseball stadium Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium in 2016.

Former Buchanan volleyball players recognized

The Big West Conference announced its all-conference men’s volleyball team last week and it includes two former Buchanan High players.

Patrick Gasman (Hawaii) and Kyle Merchen (Cal State-Northridge) were named to the all-conference team.

Gasman is a middle blocker for the Rainbow Warriors. He guided Hawaii to a 10-0 record in the Big West Conference and is the first four-time Big West first-team selection.

Hawaii is the top seed in the seven-team NCAA Tournament.

Merchen was also named to the first team. He was the setter for the Matadors. He transferred to Northridge after a redshirt 2019 season at Concordia.
