This Central Section soccer team won on penalty kicks to advance in CIF state playoffs

The Sanger High boys soccer team won on penalty kicks over Central Valley-Ceres in the California Interscholastic Federation state playoffs Tuesday.

The third-seeded Apaches, winners of the County/Metro Athletic Conference and the Central Section Division II title, edged Central Valley 8-7 in the Northern California Division II regionals.

Sanger will next play at 4 p.m. Thursday on the road against No. 2 Las Lomas-Walnut Creek in the regional semifinals.

A penalty kick by Sanger’s Ezequiel Chavez and a save by Eddie Cuevas made the difference Tuesday.

The Apaches led 1-0 in the second half before the Hawks tied the match at the 71st minute.

Also advancing were the Clovis and Kingsburg girls soccer teams.

The No. 2 seed Cougars rolled to a 4-0 victory over No. 7 Folsom in Division II action.

Clovis will host No. 6 Maria Carillo-Santa Rosa at 4 p.m. Thursday at Lamonica Stadium

No. 4 Kingsburg blanked No. 5 Ripon 2-0 to move on to face top-seed No. 1 Branson-Ross in Division IV.

In a stunner, the top-seeded Clovis North girls, who beat Clovis for the section Division I championship, lost 3-2 in overtime to No. 8 Carondelet-Concord in D-I.
