Buchanan High shines on the first day of the CIF state wrestling championships

If the Buchanan High wrestling team wants to make it five straight CIF state championships, the Bears are off to a good start.

Ten Buchanan wrestlers advanced during the first day Thursday at the Mechanics Bank Arena in Bakersfield.

The Bears lead the way with 107 points, followed by Poway (96.5) and Clovis (82.5).

The quarterfinals will feature some familiarity.

Carlos Negrete Jr. of Buchanan and Laz Maldonado of Clovis West will meet at 120 pounds.

At 126 pounds, Maximo Renteria will oppose Justin Mouritsen of Clovis.

Hunter Leake of Buchanan and Sloan Swan of Clovis will face off at 132s.

At 182s, Jadon Martin of Buchanan and Tyler Avila of Porterville will wrestle for the right to advance.

The consolation rounds will begin at 9 a.m. and quarterfinals will start at 3:45 p.m.

Girls recap

Buchanan High sophomore and state champion Cristelle Rodriguez advanced to the quarterfinals at 111 pounds.

She dominated the two rounds, winning by fall and technical fall.

She was also joined by Valeree Ornelas of Clovis in the quarterfinals in the same weight class.
