Buchanan wins section Masters. Next up, five straight state titles for the Bears?

Buchanan High appears ready to go after its fifth straight state wrestling title.

The Bears sent 11 wrestlers to the Central Section Masters finals and eight left crowned as champions Saturday at the Hoover gym.

Buchanan totaled 380 points – well ahead of second-place Clovis at 256.5 points.

Crowned champions at the Masters for the Bears were: Raymond Lopez (108-pound class), Carlos Negrete Jr. (122), Maximo Renteria (128), Hunter Leake (134), Kyler Lake (140), Logan Gioffre (147), Reymundo Raiz (154) and Rocco Contino (162).

Renteria is a defending state champion, having beaten Clovis’ Brandon Paulson 3-2 in last year’s final.

The state championships will be held Feb. 27-29 at Mechanics Bank Arena in Bakersfield.

Girls

Santa Maria edged Ridgeview by five points, 107-102, with Selma third at 101 in the section finals in Bakersfield.

Buchanan sophomore Cristelle Rodriguez, a defending state champion, was among the weight-class winners. Bao Ahn Duncan-Perez of Clovis was named outstanding upper-weight wrestler.
