Boys volleyball: Buchanan, Clovis North earn berths in SoCal regionals
The back-to-back Central Section champion Buchanan High boys volleyball team was awarded the No. 5 seed in the CIF Southern California Regional Division I bracket announced Sunday.
The Bears (30-6), who swept Clovis North on Friday to win their ninth Valley title, will play at No. 4 seed Torrey Pines in Tuesday’s quarterfinals. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m. in San Diego.
Buchanan has won 10 in a row, is ranked 14th in the nation and 13th in the state by MaxPreps and is led by seniors Ryan Smith and Patrick Gasman and junior Donovan Mitchell.
The Falcons (21-9) are No. 17 in the state and were swept in the semifinals last week to eventual San Diego Section D-I champion Cathedral Catholic.
Defending state champion and three-time Southern Section winner Huntington Beach drew the top-seed in D-I. The Oilers are unbeaten this season at 36-0 and host No. 8 seed Palisades in the first round, with the winner meeting the victor between Buchanan and Torrey Pines in the semifinals on Thursday.
Buchanan last won the CIF state regional in 2011, when the Bears went 39-3 and won 32 in a row to finish the season.
In D-II, Central Section runner-up Clovis North is the fifth seed. The Broncos (31-11) will travel to No. 4 seed Cathedral Catholic (21-10).
The first two rounds will be played at the higher seed, with the SoCal Regional finals set for Saturday at Cerritos College in Norwalk.
