From baseball to track and field, Fresno High set to induct its 2017 Athletic Wall class

Nine individual athletes, a coach and the 1960 North Yosemite League champion boys basketball team will be honored at the 11th annual Fresno High Alumni Athletic Wall of Champions Dinner.

Tickets are $65 for the Oct. 11 event that begins with a no-host social at 5:30 p.m. at Pardini’s Banquet Hall.

The fall fundraiser contributes to the Alumni Association’s support of athletic and academic activities.

The 2017 inductees, with brief bios provided by the association:

Jeff Beaubier: 1957, track and field; set school distance running records

Leonard Berry: 1960, tennis; Valley mixed doubles champion; University of Denver Athlete of the Year

Chuck Cobb: 1954, track and field, football; All-America Stanford hurdler; alternate on 1960 U.S. Olympic team

Ed Hamlin: 1959, cross country, track and field; Valley champion twice; captain of the Harvard cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field teams

Ken Jensen: 1961, basketball and baseball; Fresno High Athlete of Year; All-City, All-League, All-Valley and All-Northern California in basketball

Bill Kendrick: Assistant, head football coach for 20 years

Mike Long: 1972, football; played defense and offense for 1971 team that won Valley and finished 11-1

Liz Miles: 1973, tennis; also UC Berkeley rowing; member of the U.S. rowing team at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics; two silvers on U.S. national teams in Munich 1981 and Lucerne 1982

Bill Rogers: 1951, track and field, football; holds record for longest run from scrimmage (96 yards) in Stanford football history

Mike Urrizola: 1957, baseball; 15-1 pitching record for Valley champions

1960 basketball team: NYL champions; coached by Lee Angelich, 18-1 record

Videos about the inductees will be shown at the dinner before they are edited into the permanent Athletic Wall of Champions touch-screen display at Fresno High.

The videos give present and future FHS students the opportunity to see the stories about Fresno High’s greatest athletes, coaches, and teams.
