It will be a busy week for Central and Buchanan teams in matchups of Nos. 1 and 2

Two meetings of Nos. 1 vs. 2 are set this week in Central Section high school sports.

Tuesday night, it’s Central at Buchanan girls volleyball at 6 p.m. in the Bears’ gym. Central (29-2) is No. 1 in the MaxPreps section computer rankings, and Buchanan (25-4) is No. 2. Both teams are 2-0 in the Tri-River Athletic Conference, which has all six teams within the top 17 in MaxPreps’ rankings.

The last time Central lost was Sept. 15 against Sacred Heart-Louisville at the Durango tournament. Buchanan’s last loss was to Central at the San Luis Obispo Town tournament on Sept. 9. The Grizzlies won in three sets.

Thursday night, it’s Central at Buchanan football at 7 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Grizzlies (4-1) have been No. 1 in The Bee’s football coaches’ Top 10 poll much of the season and are coming off a bye week after losing to national power De La Salle-Concord. Buchanan (5-0) has steadily risen up The Bee poll.

Rounding out the big week is a preview to the state cross country championships. The 39th annual Clovis Invitational is Saturday at Woodward Park.

Elite teams from throughout the state descend on Fresno for a race that uses the same 5,000-meter course as the state meet.

There are 18 races Saturday. The first race is at 7:15 a.m. and the last race is at 1:20 p.m. The championship division starts at 8:55 a.m. (girls) and 9:30 a.m.. (boys).

Nearly 200 schools (several from Nevada) and 4,200 runners are entered.
