Buchanan’s Smith sweeps Masters distance runs, Bears take title; Central is boys champ
Buchanan High freshman Corie Smith completed a distance sweep, winning the 1,600 in 5:00.27 and leading a Bears sweep in the 3,200 in 10:47.95 at the Central Section Masters meet at Buchanan’s Veterans Memorial Stadium, the final qualifier before the CIF State meet June 2-3 at the same site.
Team championships went to the Central boys with 53 points. Clovis (49), Buchanan and Clovis North (42) rounded out the top four. Buchanan was the girls team champion with 121, followed by Clovis North (62), Stockdale (50) and Central (44).

Strathmore’s Madison Bower pulled off a surprise in the 300 hurdles, entering with the section’s fifth-best time but winning in 44.27. Tulare’s Kyra Bailey won the 200 (24.71) and 400 (55.54), both in season bests. Clovis North’s Danae Manibog was the season leader in both but had to settle for third and second, respectively.
Clovis North’s Brooke Tjerrild topped her season and state second-best height in the pole vault by an inch by clearing 13-5.
On the boys side, Edison’s Elijah Isiah won the 400 in 48.54 to improve his section-leading time. Fresno’s Evert Silva entered as the leader in both the 1,600 and 3,200 but only won the latter in 9:11.36. Buchanan’s Hayden Hansen (4:15.05) won the 3,200 with Silva seventh.
Cousins and state leaders Jonah and Jacob Wilson continued their dominance of the discus and shot put. Jonah (Clovis), who set a state record with a throw of 221-5 in April, was the discus winner in 199-11 with Jacob (Buchanan) second at 194-0.
Jacob won the shot at 64-6.5, with Jonah second at 63-4.
