Game replay: San Diego State 21, Fresno State 7

Fresno State’s defense mostly answered the call Saturday night. But now where’s the offense?

The Bulldogs managed just 89 total yards, falling 21-7 to San Diego State in a Mountain West Conference game.

Fresno State (1-4) is 0-2 in league for the first time since 2004 and has lost four straight overall for the first time since 2006.

The Bulldogs gave up yards in bunches on the opening possession, capped by Donnel Pumphrey’s 33-yard touchdown run. A muffed punt set up a short field and Zach Greenlee’s tying touchdown 16-yard pass to KeeSean Johnson, but that was it.

Fresno State was 0 for 12 on third downs and senior running back Marteze Waller left in the second half with an apparent concussion after gaining just 20 yards on 11 carries.

Maxwell Smith threw a pair of second-half touchdown passes for San Diego State (2-3, 1-0).

Smith fired 33 yards to Rashaad Penny for the first of his two TD passes, and then found Eric Judge from 44 yards out to complete the scoring.

Case Price and Pumphrey ran for 151 and 124 yards, respectively, to power the Aztecs offense.

Fresno State next hosts Utah State in its homecoming game Saturday night at Bulldog Stadium.

“We came ready to play but as you could see just a couple plays will make the difference in a game,” said Bulldogs linebacker Jeff Camilli who recorded a game-high 14 tackles, his third straight game with double-digit stops.

“We just have mature and limit that in preparing for Utah State next week. We have to block all of those plays out, short memory, just keep going, keep being physical.”

Fresno State senior inside (Mike) linebacker Kyrie Wilson, the Bulldogs’ second-leading tackler, did not play because of an elbow injury suffered last week in a loss at San Jose State.
