Fresno State RB Waller named to Walker watch list
Fresno State senior Marteze Waller was named Thursday to the watch list for the 26th Doak Walker Award, which annually recognizes the nation’s top college running back.
Waller rushed for 1,368 yards and 11 touchdowns as a junior, earning second-team All-Mountain West honors. His 6.1 yards per carry average ranked No. 12 among all Football Bowl Subdivision players who had 200 or more carries.
Waller is 13th on the school’s career rushing yards list with 2,188.
Former Central High standout Nick Wilson, a sophomore at Arizona, is also on the 69-player watch list. Wilson rushed for 1,375 yards and 16 touchdowns last season for the Wildcats.
Ten semifinalists will be selected Nov. 18, with the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee narrowing the field to three finalists Nov. 24. The recipient of the Doak Walker Award will be announced live during ESPN’s The Home Depot College Football Awards show Dec. 10.
▪ Bulldogs senior offensive lineman Justin Northern made the 80-person watch list for the Wuerffel Trophy, know as college football’s premier award for community service. Also making the list for the award – to be announced Dec. 10 – was USC quarterback Cody Kessler, a former Centennial High standout.
Bulldogs have 98 athletes named Academic All-MW
