Poll: Fresno State will retire jersey No. 22 in honor of Lorenzo Neal. But who’s next?

Fresno State will retire the jersey No. 22 in honor of running back Lorenzo Neal, one of the Bulldogs’ all-time greats and a 16-year NFL veteran who is recognized as one of if not the best blocking fullback in its history.

Neal on Saturday will join former Bulldogs’ quarterback Kevin Sweeney, running back Dale Messer, kicker Vince Petrucci and wide receiver Henry Ellard, who were the first to be honored in 2000. Quarterback Trent Dilfer was next to join the select group in 2001, a few weeks after leading the Baltimore Ravens to a victory in Super Bowl XXXV, then quarterbacks David Carr in 2007 and Derek Carr in 2017.

But, who’s next?

The athletics department for years had only a loose set of guidelines, but now has a set of criteria to be honored. Athletes become eligible 10 years following their last game or match and they must have earned at least two varsity letters, achieved recognition in the conference, region, nationally or internationally, be a current or former record holder at any of those levels and have displayed leadership on their team while at Fresno State.

Here is your chance to vote on who should be the next player to be honored by the university, choosing among a list of seven former Bulldogs. Voting ends at 1 p.m. Saturday. To vote again in the non-scientific poll, hit refresh.
