Fresno State’s DeBoer starts football staff makeover with two hires on defensive side

Fresno State coach Kalen DeBoer has made his first two hires, according to sources, bringing in William Inge and Chuck Morrell for to-be-determined positions on the defensive side of the football.

Inge has spent the past seven seasons at Indiana, where DeBoer was offensive coordinator this past year.

DeBoer took over as Fresno State coach on Dec. 17, replacing Jeff Tedford, who stepped down due to heart-related health issues.

Inge was the Hoosiers’ special teams coordinator the past two seasons, coached linebackers before that, and has a resume studded with college and NFL stars.

Inge was defensive coordinator and linebackers coach for two years at Buffalo when Khalil Mack developed into the No. 5 overall pick by the Oakland Raiders in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Inge also was the assistant defensive line coach for the Buffalo Bills in 2012, coaching defensive end Mario Williams and defensive tackle Kyle Williams.

Inge’s other stops as an assistant have been at Cincinnati, San Diego State, Colorado and Northern Iowa.

Morrell has been the coach at NAIA Montana Tech for the past nine seasons, was the defensive coordinator at South Dakota in 2009 and the defensive coordinator at Sioux Falls from 1989 to ‘09.

DeBoer was head coach at Sioux Falls from 2006 to ‘09. Together, DeBoer and Morrell won three NAIA national championships.

While at Sioux Falls, Morrell coached 44 all-conference players and 11 All-Americans.

The hires are expected to be made official sometime this week – Fresno State has had job postings for assistant coaches open since Dec. 24, as well as for an assistant athletic director for football operations.
