UNLV starting quarterback out for Fresno State game

UNLV will be without starting quarterback Johnny Stanton for Saturday’s game against Fresno State, Rebels coach Tony Sanchez announced Tuesday.

Sanchez said redshirt freshman Dalton Sneed will start against the Bulldogs at Sam Boyd Stadium after announcing Stanton would miss the next three to four weeks with a small ligament tear in his right knee and hamstring.

The 6-foot-2, 245-pound Stanton started UNLV’s first four games, completing 46.7 percent of his passes and averaging 5.8 yards per carry in the Rebels’ run-heavy offense.

This will be Sneed’s first career start. The 6-foot, 195-pounder has appeared in two games and attempted two passes. He was a three-star recruit by 247Sports and ESPN out of Horizon High (Ariz.).

Junior Kurt Palandech, who started against Fresno State last season, is also expected to see action.

The Rebels, 1-3 like the Bulldogs, are coming off a 33-30 overtime loss at home to Idaho.
