Fresno State removes second player from basketball team amid gambling investigation
Fresno State has removed guard Jalen Weaver from the basketball team, the second player to be dismissed during an internal investigation into gambling activities in the program.
Weaver is the Bulldogs’ leading scorer, averaging 12.5 points per game, and had the highest usage percentage among the starters. Weaver did not make the trip to Colorado Springs, Colo. last Saturday when the Bulldogs, with only seven players, lost to Air Force in overtime and dropped a 10th game in a row.
An athletics department spokesperson said the university would have no additional comment. It also quietly removed guard Mykell Robinson from the ream last week.
Guard Zaon Collins also has been tied to the internal investigation, and did not play at Air Force. His status is to be determined.
Fresno State, in a dismal 5-23 season under first-year coach Vance Walberg, will play Boise State on Saturday at the Save Mart Center.
It is unclear the potential level of involvement of the players in any alleged betting, but the NCAA prohibits betting on games or providing information to any individuals involved in or associated with any type of sports betting activities involving intercollegiate, professional or amateur games or competition. That includes pools, parlays and prop bets, in-game betting and single-game wagers. The prohibitions apply to student-athletes, coaches and athletics staff members regardless of their sport or division of competition.
Student-athletes who violate those rules will be ineligible for competition, subject to appeal.
