Fresno State roundup: ’Dogs move up in softball poll

The Fresno State softball team got a bump in one national ranking, moving up one spot to No. 21 in the ESPN/USA softball poll announced Tuesday.

The Bulldogs (34-9-1, 15-0 MW), who will aim to extend their record Mountain West start in a three-game series at second-place San Jose State (22-21, 11-4) this weekend, stayed at No. 20 in the USA Today/NFCA poll.

Baseball – Fresno State (26-15, 14-7 MW) is on the road this week, first facing Sacramento State (24-15, 12-3 WAC) for the second time this season at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Raley Field. RH Edgar Gonzalez (2-1, 3.86 ERA) will face Hornets RH Tanner Olson (3-3, 4.04 ERA). The Bulldogs won 7-5 on April 6 at Beiden Field. They visit Air Force this weekend.

Track and field – Fresno State’s Annemarie Schwanz and Je’Nia Sears were named the MW women’s track and field athletes of the week after the pair set the No. 2-ranked NCAA marks (and school records) in their events over the weekend.

Schwanz, a junior, won the 1,500-meter run at the Stanford Twilight in 4:14.89 while Sears, a senior, went 21 feet, 9 inches (6.63m) in the long jump at the Bulldog Invitational.
