Fresno State roundup: Cal Poly rolls over Bulldogs baseball team
Cal Poly jumped on freshman starter Kenny Varnell early and cruised to a 7-1 nonconference baseball victory over Fresno State on Tuesday in San Luis Obispo.
The Mustangs (22-13) struck for two runs in the first then chased Varnell, making his second start of the season, with three more in the fourth as the Bulldogs (24-14) had a three-game winning streak snapped while also losing for the sixth time in their past 10 games.
Fresno State scored in the third when Brody Russell’s RBI single brought in Nick Warren.
The Bulldogs return to Beiden Field at 6:05 p.m. Friday to open a Mountain West series against San Jose State.
Softball – Fresno State (30-9-1) climbed to No. 20 in the USA Today/NFCA rankings and No. 22 in the ESPN/USA Softball poll heading into Wednesday’s nonconference game at Pacific (19-18).
Coming off the Bulldogs’ sweep of Utah State last weekend – Fresno State’s fourth straight Mountain West series sweep – senior pitcher Jill Compton was named the conference pitcher of the week for the the 11th time in her career. Compton started all three games against the Aggies, picking up two wins with a 3.94 ERA in 16 innings pitched.
Fresno State looks to remain unbeaten in MW games when it hosts Colorado State (18-19, 4-7) in a three-game series starting Friday at Margie Wright Diamond If the Bulldogs win Friday, they would tie the 2006 San Diego State Aztecs for the best start to conference play at 13-0.
Women’s golf – The Bulldogs jumped a spot into second place after the second round of the Mountain West Championships, nine strokes behind tournament-leading UNLV heading into the final day at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage.
Fresno State is at 22-over 598 and was led Tuesday by Yifei Wang, who moved up 15 spots with a 73. Wang (78-73) sits in a tie for 12th. Also for the Bulldogs, Gudrun Bjorgvinsdottir (71-76) is tied for third, Kristin Simonsen (73-77) is tied for ninth, Hannah Sodersten (77-75) is tied for 15th and Mimi Ho (76-77) is tied for 21st.
UNLV is at 13-over 589 and Rebels junior Alexandra Kaui holds a one-stroke outright lead at 143 after posting a 1-under 71, the only round under par Tuesday.
Lacrosse – Fresno State lost 16-6 at UC Davis on Tuesday, though two Bulldogs made Fresno State history. Senior Anjelica Fuccillo scored a goal to become Fresno State’s all-time points leader (96) and junior Kyleigh Westgarth set the single-season mark for draw controls (39). Caroline Dineen-Carlson led the Bulldogs (4-10, 1-7 MPSF) with two goals against the Aggies (6-6, 4-3).
