Fresno State notebook: Bulldogs pound out another baseball win at San Jose State
Another big night for senior Brody Russell, four RBIs by Jesse Medrano and a second straight solid start have Fresno State poised to sweep a Mountain West series at San Jose State.
Russell, who drove in a career-high five in a 13-4 win in the series opener, homered and drove in three as the Bulldogs (16-7, 6-2) beat San Jose State 9-4 on Friday at Municipal Stadium. Jimmy Lambert tired late but went 8 1/3 innings after Ricky Tyler Thomas pitched seven scoreless innings on Thursday.
Lambert (5-0) retired the first nine batters he faced, allowing his first hit to start the fourth – an Ozzy Braff single. He took a six-hitter into the seventh, but allowed five hits and a pair of runs in the final two innings.
The Bulldogs and Spartans (6-15, 2-8) close the series at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Men’s tennis – Fresno State posted 7-0 wins over Sonoma State and Holy Names at Wathen Center.
Sophomore Jakob Keppelmann won 18 straight games before settling for 6-0, 6-0 and 6-0, 7-6 wins for the Bulldogs (8-9), who host San Diego State at 11 a.m. Sunday.
