Korby Batesole drove in the go-ahead run with a single up the middle in the seventh and Scott Silva scored an insurance run on a wild pitch an inning later as Fresno State edged Saint Mary’s 6-4 in nonconference baseball Tuesday afternoon in Moraga.
Batesole, who entered the game in the fourth inning, finished 2 for 4 with one run and an RBI. Nos. 4 and 5 hitters Aaron Arruda and Austin Guibor also had two hits each.
Fresno State (14-7, 4-2 Mountain West Conference) has won three consecutive games after dropping seven in a row.
The Bulldogs used a carousel of pitchers to get through as they head into a three-game Mountain West series at San Jose State (6-13, 2-6) starting Thursday.
Mark Reece got the start and pitched two scoreless innings. Anthony Arias followed, but the left-hander gave up four runs on three hits in 2 1/3 innings. Arias started the season with 12 1/3 scoreless innings but since has allowed 13 runs over 11 2/3 innings.
Tim Borst took a break from his closer role to try to get Arias out of a bind the fifth inning. Borst gave up a two-run single that allowed half of Arias’ runs to score as the Gaels tied it 4-4.
But Borst wouldn’t allow another run while going 2 2/3 innings and piling up six strikeouts. Brennon Williams and Dylan Lee threw a scoreless inning each in the eighth and ninth to lock up the win.
