Fresno State women’s basketball: ’Dogs crumble at Colorado State

Fresno State got an early step on No. 22-ranked Colorado State before falling apart in the fourth quarter as the host Rams pulled out a 68-55 victory Tuesday night at Moby Arena in Fort Collins, Colo.

Colorado State (27-1, 17-0) outscored the Bulldogs (18-10, 14-3) 24-10 in the fourth quarter to clinch a third straight Mountain West Conference women’s basketball regular-season title while running its winning streak to 24 games.

Fresno State led for 18:55 of game time, but the Rams refused to let the Bulldogs spoil their senior night that was also paired with a Mountain West trophy presentation. The loss snapped Fresno State’s five-game winning streak.

Colorado State senior Keyora Wharry (Edison High/Fresno City) converted a three-point play at the end of the third quarter, making the layup and free throw, to cut the Bulldogs’ lead to one – 45-44.

Fellow Rams seniors Jamie Patrick and Ellen Nystrom then fueled a 14-2 Rams run from long range, with Patrick dropping in three three-pointers and Nystrom adding another.

Nystrom finished with 16 points, nine rebounds and nine assists. Patrick had a game-high 21 and Wharry added 16.

The Bulldogs in the fourth quarter were held scoreless over a four-minute stretch and made just 2 of 12 from the field for the period. Fouls didn’t help, as four Bulldogs finished the game with four apiece and Moriah Faulk fouled out with five.

Fresno State’s inside game was limited for most of the game with reigning conference player of the week Bego Faz Davalos in foul trouble. The 6-foot-3 redshirt sophomore picked up three fouls in two minutes in the second quarter and her fourth midway through the third.

Faz Davalos finished with 11 points and six rebounds. Brittany Aikens led the Bulldogs with 13 points, hitting 3 of 4 three-pointers.

The Bulldogs will close the regular season at Save Mart Center at 7 p.m. Friday against Utah State (13-15, 8-9) before heading to the Mountain West tournament next week in Las Vegas.
