Fresno State softball: Bulldogs upset No. 8 Tennessee to open season 2-0
Fresno State wasted little time proving it can be among the nation’s softball elite, sweeping a season-opening doubleheader Friday at Arizona State’s Kajikawa Classic.
The Bulldogs shut out Indiana 7-0, then toppled nationally ranked No. 8 Tennessee 7-3 in Tempe.
Junior transfer Lindsey Willmon stole the show, smashing two home runs and finishing a combined 5 for 7 with five RBIs.
Willmon, who played two seasons at Hawaii, was 4 for 4 against the Volunteers (1-1). She started both games at first base, where she made 15 putouts without an error.
The first homer was a two-run blast that was part of a four-run second inning against the Hoosiers. The next was a two-run homer to give the Bulldogs a 5-1 lead on the Volunteers in the fourth. She added an RBI double in the seventh.
Fresno State senior Jill Compton silenced the Hoosiers (0-2), fanning seven while allowing three hits in six innings. Hannah Harris pitched the seventh.
Taylor Langdon pitched the second game for the Bulldogs, allowing three runs on five hits and a walk in three innings. Harris went the final four.
Freshman Dominique Jackson also homered for the Bulldogs, slugging a three-run blast in the second against Tennessee.
