Women’s tennis: Bulldogs upset No. 9 UCLA, advance to National Indoors

Fresno State advanced to the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships with a 4-3 upset of No. 9 UCLA on Saturday in Los Angeles.

The Bulldogs, ranked 54th nationally, received match point from No. 4 singles player Galina Bykova, who downed Alaina Miller 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.

Fresno State also received singles wins from Rana Sherif Ahmed (6-4, 6-4 over Kristin Wiley) and Anneka Watts (6-1, 6-1 over Laura Luca), and captured the doubles point on victories from Watts and sister Sophie Watts (6-1 over Terri Fleming/Maia Magill) as well as Olivia Noble and Sofya Malysheva (6-4 over Miller/Wiley).

The Bulldogs opened the ITA Kick-Off weekend with a 4-1 defeat of No. 34 Arkansas on Friday. The Indoor Championships are Feb. 5-8 at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.
