Fresno State has 74 earn Mountain West Scholar-Athlete honors
For the third straight year since joining the conference, Fresno State’s number of Mountain West Scholar-Athletes has increased.
The Bulldogs had 74 student-athletes recognized during the 2014-15 year, up from 50 in 2013-14 and 71 in 2012-13.
Women’s swimming and diving led the way with 12, the most ever by a Fresno State team.
Women’s soccer and women’s track and field were second with seven each, followed by men’s track and field (six), football (five), softball (five), women’s basketball (five), women’s tennis (five), women’s volleyball (five), baseball (four), men’s golf (four), men’s tennis (four), women’s cross country (two), women’s golf (two) and men’s cross country (one).
Of those 15 Bulldogs teams, 10 ranked in the top four in the Mountain West for their respective sport. The Fresno State women’s basketball and men’s tennis teams each ranked first for most recipients in their sport.
To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better while participating in a Mountain West-sponsored sport.
Additionally, seven Fresno State equestrian (NCEA) and 13 Fresno State women’s lacrosse (MPSF) student-athletes would have met the minimum requirements for the MW’s scholar-athlete award had those sports been sponsored by the conference.
