Fresno State’s volleyball team adds two recruits

Former Clovis North High standout Sabrina Winslow and Turlock’s Madelyn Halteman are the final recruits for the Fresno State volleyball team, bringing its incoming class to eight.

Winslow was a four-year varsity performer who helped Clovis North to a runner-up finish in the Central Section Division I playoffs as a senior while earning All-Bee honors. The 6-foot outside hitter had 296 kills and 175 digs last season.

“Sabrina is a workhorse. She’s had a blistering swing since she was young,” Fresno State coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell said in a news release. “A local kid, she’ll be a fan-favorite and has loads of potential we’re excited to tap into. With some experience, we think she’ll be a six-rotation pin hitter strengthening us on both sides of the ball.”

Halteman is a 5-10 setter from Pitman High, where she helped the Pride win the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I title and reach the finals of the CIF State Championships in D-I. Halteman had 941 assists and 113 digs last season. She is expected to redshirt this year.

“This kid is a winner and plays at a high level,” Netherby-Sewell said. “She loves the game and sets a fast, consistent game. We like her size and athletic ability. She’s the setter of our future and we’re pumped to add her to our roster.”

Fans can get their first look at Fresno State’s 2015 team when they take on a group of former Bulldogs in an exhibition Aug. 22. The Bulldogs open the season Aug. 28 at the Western Carolina Tournament in Cullowhee, N.C.
