Fresno State weekend on diamonds filled with sweeps. Here’s how it happened

Fresno State’s marquee spring-season teams went opposite directions over the weekend, the softball team sweeping five games while the baseball team was getting swept across Cedar Avenue.

Softball

Hailey Dolcini pitched her second four-hit shutout of the weekend as the Bulldogs beat Pacific 4-0 Sunday at Margie Wright Diamond to cap the Fresno State Invitational.

The Bulldogs (13-3) showed they can win a variety of ways on the weekend, beating UC Santa Barbara 10-9 (after falling behind 7-1), beating Illinois-Chicago 1-0 and 6-3 and beating Ohio State 9-4.

Dolcini (4-1) went the distance in the 1-0 win, with 15 strikeouts. She struck out six against Pacific and didn’t walk a batter in either game.

Second baseman Miranda Rohleder had a big weekend, batting 7 for 13 with six runs, three doubles, a triple and four RBI.

Fresno State steps up in class next weekend when it plays at the Judy Garman Classic in Fullerton, a five-game run that starts with Illinois on Friday night and then back-to-back games Saturday against Texas and Washington.

Baseball

Washington finished the three-game sweep in dramatic fashion Sunday at Pete Beiden Field, scoring seven runs in the ninth to beat the Bulldogs 9-6.

The Huskies (5-2) of the Pac-12 opened the weekend with 8-1 and 3-1 victories.

Fresno State (2-4) looked set Sunday after adding a run in the eighth for a 5-2 lead, sending closer Kevin Larson back out with a cushion in his second inning.

But after a groundout to start the inning, Larson surrendered three straight singles, a balk, another single, three walks, a sacrifice fly and the big blow, a two-run double.

Ivan Luna tucked a homer into a bottom of the ninth filled with swinging strikeouts.

The Bulldogs play Cal Poly on Tuesday night at Pete Beiden Field.
