Fresno State hit a freakish growth spurt.

But there was no reward for the young Bulldogs on Saturday despite taking apart the most efficient offensive team in the Mountain West Conference in falling 77-70 in overtime at No. 25 Utah State.

The Aggies outscored the Bulldogs by six points in the final minute, fueled by free throws, which was decisively in favor of Utah State throughout the game.

Utah State was 31 of 34 at the line, and took more foul shots in the second half and OT than the Bulldogs achieved throughout the entire game. Fresno State (2-6, 0-2 in the MW) was 13 of 15 at the line.

The Bulldogs did take a huge forward step in almost winning on the road win over a ranked team for the first time since a win at No. 12 Tulsa in 2000.

Utah State, which had hit 47.2% of their shots over their past eight games, shot just 35% (21 of 60) against the Bulldogs, including 21.1% (4 of 19) from the 3-point line.

The Bulldogs also got huge games from their seniors with New Williams putting together his best game of the season with 26 points, five rebounds, and Nate Grimes recording another double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds, along with four blocked shots.
