There’ll be a rare doubleheader happening this weekend on Cedar Avenue: Fresno State vs. San Jose State in baseball and softball.

The Bulldogs and Spartans lock up in Mountain West Conference series that are particularly important to Fresno State.

Baseball

At Beiden Field, the Bulldogs come in rolling off a 17-2 nonconference rout Tuesday of Pacific. Senior McCarthy Tatum (Clovis High) had a career-best five RBIs and senior Zach Ashford (Buchanan) had a career-high four runs scored. Ashford was 3 for 3 with two doubles and two walks.

Fresno State (9-5, 1-2 Mountain West) lost its conference-opening series to UNLV at home two weeks ago, then had last weekend’s scheduled series at Air Force canceled because of weather issues.

San Jose State (12-8, 6-3) is leading the conference. The top four in the regular season in the seven-team Mountain West advance to the conference tournament Memorial Day weekend in Reno.

Weekend game times are 6:05 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1:05 p.m. Sunday.

Softball

The stakes are higher at Margie Wright Diamond, where the Bulldogs look to rebound after losing all three games in their Mountain West season-opening series at Colorado State last weekend.

Fresno State was picked by coaches to finish second in conference behind Boise State, which is 1-2. San Jose State (18-8), which had the conference bye last weekend, was picked to finish third. With no Mountain West tournament, the automatic NCAA Tournament berth goes to the regular-season champion.

Game times are 6 p.m. Friday, 3 p.m. Saturday and noon Sunday.

The Bulldogs (15-9) snapped their losing streak Wednesday night by beating visiting Cal State Northridge 2-0. Hailey Dolcini (7-3) pitched a four-hitter for her third shutout and Fresno State manufactured runs on alert baserunning by Aaliyah Cuevas (Madera) and Kaitlyn Jennings. Dolcini put down a two-on, one-out rally in the seventh sparked by senior Haileigh Gonzalez (Redwood) with a double.
