Fresno State hired former Pepperdine star Jonathan Winder as its new women’s volleyball coach, the university announced.

Winder is the son-in-law of Clovis West High boys basketball coach Vance Walberg, who was the men’s basketball coach at Pepperdine for 1 1/2 seasons before leaving in January 2008.

Winder replaces Lauren Netherby-Sewell, who was fired in November after 10 seasons with the Bulldogs.

Winder played at Pepperdine from 2005-08, becoming one of 11 players to be a four-time American Volleyball Coaches Association All-American. He helped the Waves win the 2005 national title in his freshman season.

He went on from Pepperdine to play for the U.S. national team and professionally in Europe.

Winder started his coaching career at Pepperdine in 2014, then spent the past three seasons as the women’s assistant coach at Washington plus coaching the Huskies’ beach volleyball program. Washington was the Pac-12 indoor champion in 2015-16 and made the NCAA Elite Eight each season; last year, the Huskies reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
