Hanford native Chad Boespflug scores $50K race payday
Hanford native Chad Boespflug scored the biggest victory of his racing career Sunday night in the inaugural $50,000-to-win Rock & Roll Gold Cup at Badlands Motor Speedway in South Dakota.
Boespflug, who graduated from Hanford High in 2006 and moved to the Midwest in 2007 to race full-time, also won the Saturday night preliminary for a weekend haul of $60,000.
Boespflug led the final 30 laps of the 35-lap main event for non-wing sprint cars. Two drivers familiar to central San Joaquin Valley fans finished in the top five: Bud Kaeding of Campbell was third and Ryan Bernal of Hollister was fifth.
Rico Abreu of Rutherford won the companion winged sprint car feature, also worth $50,000, to complete a California sweep.
Scelzi 15th – Dominic Scelzi of Fresno was 15th Sunday night in a World of Outlaws feature in Wisconsin, vaulting back into the top 20 in season points. Indiana driver Joey Saldana was eighth in the Fresno-based Roth Motorsports car and is fifth in the standings.
Saturday night, Scelzi raced to a 12th-place finish in an Interstate Racing Association event in Wisconsin.
