Fuego scores late, edges Las Vegas
Christian Chaney scored his Premier Development League-leading 12th goal in the 88th minute as the Fresno Fuego beat Las Vegas 1-0 on Saturday night at Green Valley High School.
Chaney ended a frustrating series of near-misses for the Fuego, with Abraham Campos shooting one over the bar in the 50th minute, Milton Blanco hitting the bar from 35 yards out in the 70th, Chaney shooting too high in the 75th and Joey Chica skimming one wide in the 87th.
Fresno (7-2-0) won its seventh in a row after opening the season with two straight losses and maintained a five-point lead on BYU Cougars – a 1-0 winner over Burlingame on Saturday – in the PDL’s Western Conference Central Pacific Division.
The Fuego faces San Diego Zest FC at 6 p.m. June 25 at James Madison High.
Las Vegas (3-4-3), with 12 points, is fourth in the five-team division.
