Christian Chaney-led Fresno Fuego rolls against Las Vegas in PDL
Christian Chaney scored four goals as the Fresno Fuego rolled to a 6-2 win over the Las Vegas Mobsters in a Premier Development League match Thursday night at Chukchansi Park.
Chaney knocked in a rebound in the 15th minute, chasing home Tony Torres’ blocked shot for a 2-0 lead in a matchup of Central Pacific Division rivals. Two minutes later, midfielder Abraham Campos found Chaney on a volley inside the penalty area for his first header of the night.
Chaney got a hat trick in the 28th, heading in a cross from Diego Medina for a 4-0 lead that held until halftime. The Mobsters scored twice in the opening 15 minutes following intermission before Chaney added his final goal in the 68th.
It was a statement win for the Fuego and interim coach Brian Zwaschka, who took over after the unexpected resignation of coach and assistant general manager Sean Lanigan on Tuesday.
It also gave Fresno (1-2) its first three points of the season after another surprise this week. Saturday’s 5-1 win over San Francisco City FC was forfeited by the club for making an illegal substitution. The three-point forfeiture was a club-imposed penalty, according to team play-by-play announcer Jason Phillips.
The Mobsters (1-2) and Fuego will play again Saturday at Chukchansi Park. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
It’s another doubleheader with sister club Fresno Freeze, which opens the action at 5 p.m. against the Hotspur Ladies in a Women’s Premier Soccer League game. The Freeze beat Primero de Mayo 4-0 in Thursday’s opening match.
