JC football roundup: Fresno City drops second straight

All week long, Fresno City College football coach Tony Cavigila was wary of Butte. He didn’t care if the Roadrunners were 0-3.

He knew his team was up against a tough team – and he was right.

Rams quarterback Christian Rossi completed 24 of 32 for 394 yards and three touchdowns, but Fresno City fell to Butte 31-28 in a nonconference game in Oroville on Saturday.

It was the second straight defeat for the Rams (2-2).

It was a fast-paced first quarter as both teams traded scores before Butte scored the final two touchdowns of the quarter to lead 17-7.

But the Rams scrambled back and with 2:49 left in the game pulled within 31-28 when Rossi connected on a 80-yard touchdown pass to Kailon Carter.

Fresno City got the ball back with 41 seconds left for one final drive but couldn’t advance into Butte territory.

Carter finished with four receptions for 194 yards and two touchdowns.

▪ Devon Calhoun rushed 15 times for 98 yards and two scores to lead College of the Sequoias to a 28-6 victory against De Anza.

The Giants are off to a 4-0 start.

▪ Reedley improved to 3-1 after a 40-2 victory over Gavilan. The Rams dropped to 0-4.
