SF Giants' three-game winning streak snapped as bullpen can't protect slim lead
For the fifth time this season, the Giants had an opportunity to extend a winning streak to four games.
For the fifth time this season, the Giants have failed to extend a winning streak to four games.
Left-handed reliever Sam Hentges couldn’t preserve San Francisco’s late one-run lead, allowing two runs in the bottom of the seventh and paving the way for a 4-3 loss to the Miami Marlins on Friday night at loanDepot Park.
Right-hander Landen Roupp, making his first appearance since generating national headlines on Pride Night last Friday, allowed two runs over six innings with seven strikeouts to one walk whie generating a season-high 16 whiffs. For Roupp, the outing marked his first quality start since throwing six innings of one-run ball on May 19.
Roupp had been the Giants’ steadiest pitcher over the first month of the season, ending April with a 2.55 ERA over six starts. But San Francisco has now lost nine straight games in which he’s started. Over his last eight starts entering play, Roupp had a 5.77 ERA over 39 innings with 45 strikeouts to 18 walks.
“His mix was great. And then, kind of trying to sniff out what they’re trying to do and made some adjustments,” manager Tony Vitello told reporters in Miami. “I think somebody smarter than I said it. I forget which pitcher, maybe Sandy Koufax: You get swing and misses when you’re not trying to get swing and misses. He showed, I thought, a lot more intent to get contact tonight.”
While the Giants used a traditional starter, the Marlins rolled with a bullpen game. Beginning with opener Lake Bachar, Miami manager Clayton McCullough utilized eight pitchers to cover nine innings, four of whom pitched multiple innings.
Giants designated hitter Rafael Devers hit his second home run in the last three games, a no-doubt solo shot in the top of the sixth inning.
For Devers, who now has 11 home runs this season, the 413-foot blast was his first homer this season off a breaking ball. Entering play, Devers was hitting .159 with a .254 slugging percentage against breaking balls.
Devers was one of three Giants to record two-hit nights, the others being Jung Hoo Lee (2-for-4 with a double and a run scored) and Casey Schmitt (2-for-4 with an RBI).
Rookie Bryce Eldridge’s 22-game on-base streak was snapped after going 0-for-4 against four different pitchers.
Reliever Ryan Walker unintentionally had a comedic moment in the bottom of the seventh when he fielded a grounder off the bat of Miami’s Heriberto Hernández. The ball got stuck in Walker’s glove, so the right-hander opted to take his glove off of his hand and heave it to Eldridge at first base to record the out.
Worth noting
Right-hander Tyler Mahle is scheduled to return from his left hamstring ailment and start on Wednesday against the Athletics, per Vitello. The team has yet to determine the corresponding roster move.
Up next
Rookie right-hander Trevor McDonald (2-4, 4.64 ERA) will take the mound against Miami’s Max Meyer (7-0, 2.75 ERA) on Saturday at 1:10 p.m. PT.
