San Diego's spring All-CIF teams include stars on diamond, gym, track and pool

Spring All-CIF San Diego Section teams

Baseball

Player of the Year: Joshua Priest, Cathedral Catholic

Playing in the toughest league in the county and in the Open Division playoffs, the junior outfielder hit .528 with five homers, 11 doubles, three triples, 29 RBIs and scored 34 runs. An Arizona State commit, he had nine three-hit games and a four-hit game. In 156 plate appearances, he struck out just 13 times on a team that finished 28-7 and lost in the championship game of the Southern California Regionals.

Pitcher of the Year: Jeremiah Jennings, Madison

Madison won its first CF championship in 50 years, winning the Division 1 title … And Jennings had a lot to do with it. The 6-foot-4, 225-pound right-hander finished 9-1 with a 1.71 ERA. A UC Santa Barbara commit, he worked 73 2/3 innings, striking out 92 with just 21 walks. During the regular season, he threw a no-hitter against Banning and shut out Mira Mesa. In the San Diego Section playoffs, Jennings threw a complete-game six-hitter, beating St. Augustine 3-2. He saved a 6-4 win over La Jolla Country Day and threw a complete-game six-hitter in the title game, beating Mt. Carmel 3-2.

Boys tennis

Player of the Year: Nick Lilov, Point Loma

The four-star senior who is headed to UC San Diego, Lilov won the San Diego Section singles championship with a 6-4, 6-0 victory in the finals at the Balboa Tennis Club. Ranked No. 93 in the nation, Lilov is the fifth Point Loma player to win a CIF singles championship.

An attacker with a 4.33 GPA, Jacobsen scored 54 goals and had 14 assists in leading Torrey Pines to a 15-3 record. He had four goals in a 15-4 Open Division championship match victory. The Dartmouth commit set the school record for career goals with 168.

A senior midfielder, Dunn carries a 4.0 GPA and is a Brown commit. She and sister Breck, combined for 136 goals in leading the Islandlers to the San Diego Section Open Division championship, beating La Costa Canyon 12-9. The Islanders finished the season 17-3 with 28 wins in a row over San Diego Section teams.

Pair of the Year: Kelly Randolph and Sam Krystkowiak, Torrey Pines

Krystkowiak, a senior, and Randolph, a junior, helped Torrey Pines to the San Diego Section Open Division championship. The pair won their championship matches 21-5 and 21-12 as the Falcons upset No. 1-seeded Cathedral Catholic. Krystkowiak is committed to play at Stanford. Randolph is committed to UC Davis. The Falcons finished the season 23-3, ranked Mo. 3 in the state.

The 6-foot-2 outside hitter finished the season with a San Diego Section-leading 535 kills, which also ranked sixth in the state. He had 32 kills in a 3-2 win over Torrey Pine in the San Diego Section Open Division championship game, a match that went 19-17 in the fifth set. He also had 32-kill matches against St. Augustine and Torrey Pines in the regular season. Bishop’s finished the season 38-3.

The San Diego Section girls singles champion, Yong repeats as the Section Player of the Year. And for the third straight season, she finished second in the State, losing to Angela Wang of Walnut. The championship match was an epic, won by Wang 23-21, 14-21, 21-19.

Softball

Player of the Year: Gabby Nevarez, Carlsbad

The left-handed hitting senior hit .487 with 15 home runs, 26 RBIs while scoring 36 runs and stealing 13 bases. A University of Arizona commit, the outfielder had 13 two-hit games and a pair of three-hit games, and struckout just 11 times in 95 plate appearances for a team that finished 21-6, winning the San Diego Section Division 2 championship.

Pitcher of the Year: Arri Romero, Mater Dei Catholic

A junior, Romero helped Mater Dei Catholic to the San Diego Open Division championship, then went on to capture the Southern California Division 1 title. She finished the season 27-3 with a 1.06 ERA. In 28 appearances, she threw 178 2/3 innings, allowing 139 hits with 16 walks while striking out 176. She had seven shutouts, including two in the playoffs. In six playoff games, she threw 42 innings, allowing 32 hits, walking three with 40 strikeouts. Another Arizona commit, she also hit .377 with five homers and 31 RBIs.

Swimmer of the Year: McKenna Carroll, Point Loma

The senior finished her high school career with a three-peat in the San Diego Section Division 2 Meet, winning the 200 freestyle for the third time, this time clocking 1:50.89. She also won the 100 freestyle and was City Conference champion in the 200 individual medley. She finished 13th in the State Meet in the 200 freestyle and 14th in the 100 freestyle.

Track Athlete of the Year: Brice Abawi, Rancho Bernardo

A senior, Abawi was the San Diego Section sprint champion, winning the 100 meters in 10.46 and the 200 meters in 21.12. He also ran a leg on the winnng 4-x100 relay team. Abawi ran 10.40 in the 100 to win the Division 1 Meet and 21.08 in the 200 to win that event.

Field Athlete of the Year: Justian Richardson, Rancho Buena Vista

Flirting with the 50-foot mark, Richardson was the San Diego Section champion in the triple jump wit a leap of 48 feet, 10 inches in the triple jump. He was also third in the high jump at the Section championship with a mark of 6-4. He finished third in the stats in eht triple jump with a mark fo 48-11 3/4. He won the Arcadia Invitational at 48-4 3/4 and had his season best 49-7 at the Escondido Invitational.

The Stanford-bound senior doubled at the San Diego Section Championships, winning the 1,600 in 4:54.82, then coming back to take the 3,200 in 10:17.77. She went on to win the 3,200 in the State Meet in 10:01.91 and place second in the 1,600 in 4:38.82, a time th set the San Diego Section record.

Field Athlete of the Year: Brooklynn Davis, Oceanside

A junior, Davis was a double winner at the San Diego Section Championships, heaving the shot put 40-feet, 3-inches and throwing the discus 125-3.
