Mike Grella Takes Another Swipe at Australian Soccer Before USMNT Match- 'Confused Themselves With Brazil'

The USMNT will be playing Australia for its second game of the 2026 World Cup. The USMNT was one of the most impressive teams at the first matchweek of the World Cup after their win over Paraguay last week.

The USMNT defeated Paraguay 4-1 last week and is currently top of Group D. Australia also won their first match in Group D against Turkiye by winning 2-0.

Before the match today, former U-20 USMNT player Mike Grella had some strong opinions about the Australian national team that has heated the game up.

Grella talks about Australia's soccer culture and believes the country is better at other sports. One comment that caused lots of reactions is Grella's words on Australia acting like Brazil by wearing the bright yellow jersey as their home kit.

Mike Grella's Comments on Australia

On the Pat McAfee Show, Mike Grella spoke about Australia ahead of their match against the USMNT today. One of his comments went viral online for the wrong reason and sparked controversy.

Grella said, "They wear a yellow shirt. I think that maybe they're getting themselves confused with Brazil or another team that's won something in the past. They've never won anything. I look up what Australians are good at. I see cricket, I see rugby, maybe outback. I'm sure they've got some wild safaris out there."

For the match between Australia and the USMNT, Grella believes Team USA will come out on top. Grella said, "But on Friday, I think they're going to come into a team that has a little bit more quality, and we'll see a U.S. win."
