Knicks Could Have Contract Dispute With Karl-Anthony Towns This Offseason
The New York Knicks may have to open up their checkbook after winning their first championship since 1973.
During this Friday's edition of "Get Up," ESPN senior writer Vince Goodwill discussed Knicks star Karl-Anthony Towns' contract situation. He claims the All-Star is feeling slighted by the Knicks' decision to hold off on giving him an extension.
As of this moment, Towns is set to make $57.1 million next season and has a $61 million player option for the 2027-28 season.
Towns is eligible for a four-year, $272 million extension with the Knicks. While we've seen Jalen Brunson take a pay cut in the past, there's no guarantee Towns is willing to give the Knicks a discount.
Make no mistake though, the Knicks would benefit greatly from Towns accepting less money.
"If Karl Towns is willing to take a little bit of a haircut, you know, $7-10 million over the course of multiple seasons and Josh Hart is also extension eligible this summer, if both of them are willing to take a little bit of a haircut, you could see this core staying together for three, four, five years," ESPN's Brian Windhorst said.
Knicks fans aren't buying it.
Earlier this week, Goodwill referred to the Larry O'Brien Trophy as a "participation trophy." It was part of his rant about dynasties and why they're good for the NBA.
"Dynasty is better for the sport," Goodwill said. "I like to know that greatness is validated. How do we know that any of the last eight champions are actually validated because they have not done it again? Giannis is itching to get out, Boston is thinking about trading Jaylen Brown, they don't believe in their one championship. LeBron's one championship in LA was not enough. So why would it be enough for us?"
With that being said, Knicks fans are convinced Goodwill is trying to generate clicks with his report about Towns.
"Vince Goodwill is a stain on ESPN right now," one fan said. "Truly a pathetic reporter / entertainer. Genuinely has no business talking hoops on the worldwide leader platform. Sad times. Do better."
"Is that the guy who was spewing that participation trophy nonsense," a second fan commented.
"He's rage baiting Knicks fans," another person wrote. "Don't take the bait."
Towns certainly looked happy during the Knicks' championship parade on Thursday. Is he willing to take less in order to remain in New York though? Only time will tell.
