Cubs Demote Top Prospect in Surprise Roster Move

It was an eventful off-day for the Chicago Cubs as a surprise demotion of a top prospect made headlines in the Windy City.

According to the team's transaction report, the Cubs demoted top prospect Moises Ballesteros to Triple-A Iowa on Thursday. The move was surprising given how highly-ranked Ballesteros is among MLB prospects. Heading into the season, he was the Cubs' top-ranked prospect according to MLB.com, and was the 55th-ranked prospect across the league.

After getting off to a hot start this year, Ballesteros had cooled off in recent weeks. Through the end of April, Ballesteros had posted a 1.146 OPS and 217 wRC+, with four home runs and 12 RBI. But over the past 30 games, his OPS had sunk to just .444, and he hasn't hit a home run since May 3rd. Overall, in 59 games this season, Ballesteros is slashing .231/.303/.385 with six home runs and 23 RBI.

One possible factor in Ballesteros' demotion is his lack of defensive abilities. Of his 59 games, Ballesteros has appeared in 47 of them as the team's DH. He's started five games at catcher this year, but the Cubs seem reluctant to play him over Carson Kelly or Miguel Amaya. With Seiya Suzuki hobbled but able to hit, the Cubs clearly believed that Ballesteros could use some more seasoning in the minors and, hopefully, a reset at the plate.

The Cubs are currently in a dogfight in the NL Central division. They sit in third place and are 7.5 games back of the Milwaukee Brewers, but occupy the final NL Wild Card spot with a half-game lead over the Arizona Diamondbacks. Once Suzuki can resume his role in the outfield, there is a chance that the Cubs will choose to recall Ballesteros. For now, the rookie has some things to figure out and will report to Triple-A Iowa.

Chicago is off on Thursday, but will open a series at Wrigley Field against the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday.
