Trevor Story Issues Strong Message on Disappointing Red Sox Season

The Boston Red Sox came into the 2026 MLB season hoping for a playoff run.

However, it sure doesn't seem promising for Boston as the halfway mark gets closer. The Red Sox fired manager Alex Cora in April, and this year continues to look very disappointing around Fenway Park.

On Thursday, the Red Sox lost to the Toronto Blue Jays, 4-3, at Fenway Park as Toronto catcher Brandon Valenzuela drove in the game-winning run in the ninth inning. That marked the fourth straight loss for Boston and the second sweep in June.

After the loss, shortstop Trevor Story said it's hard to believe where things are at the moment.

"It's hard to believe that this is where we're at. It's hard to put into words that this is where we're at. I wouldn't believe it at all if you told me this at the beginning of the year. Obviously, a lot of things play into that," Story said, via Chris Cotillo of Mass Live.

Story has been out since mid-May due to sports hernia surgery, and he hit just .206 with 3 home runs and 19 RBIs this season.

The Red Sox veteran also expressed concerns when Cora and several other coaches were fired in April.

"I mean obviously, it's kind of up in the air what the true direction of the franchise is," Story said. "Some of the best coaches in the world didn't get a fair shot."

Red Sox Expected to Sell Plenty of Pieces This Time Around

Things haven't changed much since Cora was fired, and the Red Sox are widely expected to sell players and trade away some assets at this year's deadline.

Some of the big names rumored in trade discussions are outfielder Jarren Duran and veteran closer Aroldis Chapman.

Starting pitcher Sonny Gray, who was just acquired in an offseason trade with the St. Louis Cardinals, could be a player who draws interest as well in the market.

Barring a shocking turnaround, this season appears to be a major disappointment for Boston, and who knows what the future holds for this franchise.
