Brian Windhorst Shares Update on Trae Young's Contract Situation

Trae Young opted out of his $48.97 million player option with the Washington Wizards on Monday, making him an unrestricted free agent.

However, the star point guard is widely expected to re-sign with the Wizards as they gear up for their 2026-27 NBA season.

In fact, Young is expected to sign a highly-lucrative deal with the team that brought him in with a blockbuster trade last year, according to ESPN NBA insider Brian Windhorst.

“He’s going to re-sign with the Wizards, likely on a three-year, very large contract,” Windhorst reported on Tuesday morning.

The Wizards are seemingly prepared to commit to Young as a franchise centerpiece alongside Anthony Davis, who was also acquired via trade last season. Washington, which finished the 2025-26 NBA season with a league-worst 17-65 record, also holds the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming draft.

Young appeared in just five games with the Wizards last season, averaging 15.2 points and 6.2 assists per game. The four-time NBA All-Star missed the majority of the season due to a variety of injury issues, primarily a right MCL sprain he suffered early in the year with the Atlanta Hawks.

Through 10 games with the Hawks last year, Young averaged 19.3 points and 8.9 assists per contest.
