Struggling NFC Team Named 'Obvious Choice' for Brendan Sorsby

Texas Tech Red Raiders quarterback Brendan Sorsby was granted a temporary injunction in June, which cleared him to play in the 2026 college football season. This came after the 22-year-old admitted to violating NCAA gambling rules by betting on his own team while with the Indiana Hoosiers.

However, after the controversial decision, Sorsby has decided to go a different route. On Monday, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported that the quarterback will be entering the NFL supplemental draft.

Taking place in July, the Supplemental Draft is an opportunity for players who have had a change in eligibility and missed the regular draft to be selected by any of the 32 NFL teams.

While he is now surrounded by controversy, Sorsby has shown some impressive talent on the field that would make NFL teams do their research. ESPN's Ben Solak writes that the Arizona Cardinals, who are coming off a 3-14 season, would be a clear choice.

"The Cardinals are the most obvious choice, as they don't have an exciting starting option on their roster," Solak wrote. "Veterans Jacoby Brissett and Gardner Minshew II are known backup types, while third-round rookie Carson Beck doesn't project as a high-end starter. Sorsby would easily clear Beck as the potential franchise passer."

Last season for the Cincinnati Bearcats, Sorsby completed 207-of-336 passes for 2,800 yards, 27 touchdowns and five interceptions. He also rushed the ball 100 times for 580 yards and nine touchdowns.

His ability as a passer and rusher makes him an intriguing option for many teams. However, Solak also notes that the Cardinals may not be willing to give up much value to take their 22-year-old.

In the Supplemental Draft, teams must forfeit a future pick in the following draft in the round they bid. That means if Arizona were to get Sorsby in the third round, they'd lose their 2027 third-round pick. As of now, the Cardinals have just one pick in each of the seven rounds.
