ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
Michael Scarince, South Pasadena, Jr.
South Pasadena distance specialist Michael Scarince nearly won the CIF State championship in the 3,200 meters at Buchanan High School in Clovis.
He ran the race of his life, finishing in a personal best 8:53.26 to finish a close second behind state champion Maximo Zavaleta of M.L. King, who won in 8:52.47.
It was an incredible feat for Scarince, who has been named the 2026 boys track and field athlete of the year.
Scarince won the Rio Hondo League title in the 3,200 meters and went on to win the CIF Southern Section Division 3 title as well, finishing in 8:58.83. He finished third at Masters in 8:56.27. It all made his state finals appearance even more impressive, considering he shaved three seconds off his Masters time to nearly win the state title.
Scarince also was the area's top runner in the 1,600. He won the Rio Hondo League title in the 1,600 and ran a personal best 4:08.94 at the CIF-SS Division 3 finals to finish third.
