Mike Brown's Championship Journey Comes Full Circle With Knicks' NBA Finals Win

Nineteen years separated Mike Brown’s first appearance in the NBA Finals team as a head coach and his most latest appearance, which finished in a historic New York Knicks championship victory.

In 2007, Brown guided the LeBron James-led Cleveland Cavaliers to their first ever Finals appearance. The Cavs were swept in that series, dominated by the San Antonio Spurs in a 4-0 trouncing.

Fast forward to the 2026 NBA Finals, and Brown’s championship journey has come full circle, as his Knicks rolled through the Spurs in a 4-1 series rout. It’s Brown’s first title as a head coach, but nowhere near his first taste of championship glory.

Between head-coaching stints, Brown served as an assistant under Steve Kerr for the Golden State Warriors from 2016 to 2022, a period in which he helped the Warriors hoist three Larry O’Brien Trophies. After learning what it took to get over the hump during his time in Golden State and re-entering the head coaching ranks with the Sacramento Kings, who unceremoniously fired him during the 2024-25 season, he’s proven to be just what the doctor ordered for the Knicks.

New York hired Brown last July 7 in an effort to get itself over the hump and to its first NBA Finals appearance of the 21st century. Former Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau had helped the Knicks reach the Eastern Conference Final a season ago, but in the end, New York fell at the hands of the Indiana Pacers. In a bold move, New York made a head-coaching change, which has since played out as a stroke of genius from the Knicks front office and ownership.

For the first time in his career, Brown is the leading man of an NBA Finals winner. For the first time since 1973, the Knicks are champions.

Both the team and its head coach have each followed long, arduous journeys to reach this point. And while there have been many peaks and valleys along the way for both Brown and the Knicks organization, Saturday night’s moment on the floor in San Antonio, celebrating together as champions, will last even longer than the road it took both to get there.

And that makes it all worth it in the end.
