Vincenzo Montella Issues Urgent Warning to Turkey After World Cup Shock
Turkey suffered one of the most surprising losses of the 2026 FIFAWorld Cup on Saturday night, falling 2-0 to Australia at BC Place in Vancouver.
Addressing the media after the match, Turkey’s head coach, Vincenzo Montella, speaking in his native Italian, acknowledged the disappointment while also warning his squad not to spiral.
“My congratulations to Australia. This is football, and it has to be accepted. It should give us even more motivation,” Montella said. “Above all, what I expect from the guys is to maintain a sense of balance in their self-judgement, because we’re still very much in the race.”
The loss is a significant early blow for Turkey, who were appearing in the World Cup for the first time since 2002, when they famously finished third after falling to Brazil, the eventual champions, in the semifinals.
Expectations had been high heading into this tournament, with many expecting them to win the group. So, a defeat to Australia, a young, largely inexperienced side, will certainly sting.
But Montella was quick to pump the brakes on any overreaction. “We know there is still time to recover in the group stage,” he said. “We can definitely do something more, but it is fundamental that we don’t lose our convictions, and that we remain fair and objective in our judgment, without letting the result condition us.”

The Crescent-Stars aren’t completely out of it, but the odds are now stacked against them. The United States hammered Paraguay 4-1 in the group’s opening match on Thursday, and currently sit atop the table alongside Australia with three points apiece. Turkey and Paraguay, meanwhile, sit at the bottom, each with zero points.
This makes Turkey’s upcoming match against Paraguay on June 19 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, crucial.
After that, Turkey will face co-hosts USA on June 25 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, which could serve as either a consolation match or a final lifeline.
With the top two teams advancing automatically, and the best third-place finishers also in contention for the Round of 32, Turkey’s fate is still very much in their own hands. But the pressure from here on is undeniable.
