Former All-Pro Pass Rusher Aldon Smith Dead At 36

The NFL world lost one of the most feared pass rushers of the past two decades as former All-Pro Aldon Smith passed away. He was 36 years old.

The San Francisco 49ers, who he played for from 2011 to 2014 and set multiple records for, announced his passing on Saturday evening. The team highlighted his on-field excellence and "infectious smile."

"We are devastated by the sudden and tragic passing of Aldon Smith. Aldon's undeniable talent and sheer dominance on the field were on display from the moment he joined our organization, having recorded one of the best rookie seasons the National Football League has seen. Beyond his excellence as a player, Aldon will be remembered for his infectious smile that lit up every room he walked into. Our entire organization sends its deepest condolences to the Smith family and all who knew and loved Aldon," the team said.

Dominance in the Bay Area

A former All-Big 12 selection from Missouri, Smith went No. 7 overall to the San Francisco 49ers in 2011 and became an immediate impact player for the team. His 14.0 sacks as a rookie set a 49ers franchise record and his impact was further felt in the playoffs as he helped the defense reach the NFC Championship Game that year.

The following year would truly be the coming out party for Smith as he recorded a 49ers record 19.5 sacks and set a new NFL record for fastest player to achieve 30 career sacks. He earned Pro Bowl and First-Team All-Pro honors and helped the 49ers reach the Super Bowl.

Sadly, Smith's NFL career would unravel almost as quickly as it emerged. A series of off-the-field issues limited him to just 18 games between 2013 and 2014, and a DUI arrest led to his release right before the 2015 season.

Smith played nine games for the Raiders in 2015, but he was subsequently suspended and missed the next two seasons. He was released in 2018 and was out of football for another two seasons.

In a stunning turn though, Smith returned to the league in 2020 - five years after his last game - and signed with the Dallas Cowboys. While he didn't play at an all-world level, he was a solid contributor for the team, recording 5.0 sacks, 14 QB hits and two fumble recoveries, one of which he took back for his first career touchdown.

He never played another down after that season and announced he was done with football in 2023.

Our hearts go out to Smith's family and loved ones.
